ELSIE DRIGGS (1898-1992)
Aeroplane, 1928, oil on canvas, 44" x 38", framed by Gill & Lagodich in a custom-made replica of a c.1930s American Modernist painting frame; wide reverse wave profile, water gilded in palladium leaf with light burnt sienna patina. Framed by Gill & Lagodich, period 18th century French Louis XV painting frame gilded carved oak; swept profile, very refined example with exquisite gesso reparure, washed original gilding. molding width: 4-3/4 in.
GEORGE HENRY DURRIE (1820 – 1863)
Red Schoolhouse (Country Scene), 1850–60, oil on canvas, 28-1/4" x 41-1/4", Metropolitan Museum of Art. c. 1850s American painting frame, gilded applied composition ornament on wood; molding width 5". Period frame from Gill & Lagodich. "Based in New Haven, Connecticut, Durrie traveled throughout the state, painting scenes of rural life. He was noted for his winter landscapes, which idealize the harsh season and effectively capture the visual effects of snow and ice. The New York lithographic firm Currier & Ives chose a number of his scenes for reproduction and distribution. In this nostalgic work, Durrie depicted a one-room schoolhouse with a blanket of unmelted snow on its roof, surrounded by children at play." —Metropolitan Museum of Art, permanent collection label.
ELIZABETH BOOTT DUVENECK (1846–1888)
Untitled (Autumn Foliage, Rhododendrons, Apple Blossoms, Rhododendrons), 1882, oil on wood, four panels, ~36 x10 inches. Five custom- made replica frames commissioned by the Brooklyn Museum, circa 1890s transitional style, gilded oak. (Fifth framed panel not currently on display.)
